"Should a false accusation of rape be a serious crime?"
Unrelated to atheism. From the good people of Reddit.
Now, I didn’t feel like making my millionths Reddit account, so I’ll just say something here.
How many people do you know that have been raped or sexually assaulted? Out of those people, how many do you know that have gone to the police and successfully won a court case?
Now, how many people do you that have been falsely- and I mean falsely, not your creeper friends claiming “she just regrets it”- been accused of rape and arrested for it?
ALMOST EVERY WOMAN AND QUEER I KNOW has been raped or sexually assaulted in some way, to some degree. I’d have to count who hasn’t been.
Now, what’s this shit you’re talking about false rape accusations?
^^^So much this. There are fewer people who go to jail, who are GUILTY, than there are people who DO go to jail, who are innocent.

It already is. Just like every other false criminal allegation is a crime.

Yes. I can’t even go into it because I feel like it’s just common sense. Yes it is a horrid offense and should be considered a serious crime.

Tough one….a deliberate false accusation should carry a penalty, but that could dissuade true victims from coming forward

I think the punishment is there for making false allegations. Couple that with potential tort remedies, and it really shouldn’t be an issue.

I’d rather see statistics, rather than anecdotal evidence from either side.
